Nashville was rocking on New Year's Eve as a record number of people watched the big music note drop -- officially ushering in 2016.

Leading up to the event, there was more than 6 hours of live music. The band Kings of Leon headlined the free concert and six other bands and musical artist performed throughout the night.

Honky-tonks and rooftops were packed as Nashvillians rang in the New Year. An estimated 150,000 people turned out for the event, which shattered last year's attendance of 130,000.

Around 143,000 of that record crowd filled the streets of Broadway.

Once the clock struck midnight, revelers were showered with 200 pounds of confetti.

"New Year's Day is one of the most dangerous days you can drive on," said Davidson County Sheriff's Department spokesperson Mark Preville.

Officers with the Metro Nashville Police Department were on high alert throughout the night and morning.

A record number of Metro police officers were stationed around the area to search bags and coats, making sure everyone celebrated safely.

“Every year this thing gets bigger and bigger and we look at it and make sure we bring in the right number of guys to keep it safe,” said Sgt. John Bourque with Metro Police.

Dozens of cameras covering the downtown area were monitored from a central command post, and officers were scattered throughout the crowd and rooftops.

Metro officials said it was the largest enforcement they've ever had on New Year's Eve.
