Inside Story: Council Member Spends Days, Nights in Detroit

Posted:
From Phil Williams:

Can you really represent the citizens of Nashville if you've got a fulltime job in another state -- a state where you lay your head down and go to sleep every night?

That's the question some are asking about council member Pam Murray.

Murray was first elected to the Metro Council a decade ago.

She represents parts of East Nashville, between Dickerson Pike and Ellington Parkway.

But that's not where Murray spends her days.

In fact, the licensed social worker spends her days -- and her nights -- 539 miles away.

Murray works for the Sunshine Treatment Institute, a methadone clinic in Detroit, Michigan.
The facility's website lists her as the admissions coordinator, with Monday through Friday hours, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Which doesn't leave much time to get back to Tennessee and check up on the residents in her district.

When she first registered as a social worker in Michigan, Murray listed her Tennessee address.

These days, regulators say she lists a Michigan address.

To be fair, Metro Council members say she does make it back to Nashville for council meetings, but can be very tough to reach in between.

Which is what I found when I called her Detroit office. A receptionist told me she was there, but too busy to talk.

I wonder what would have happened if it had been one of her constituents.

UPDATE:  Murray telephoned NewsChannel 5 Investigates on Tuesday afternoon. When I returned the phone call, it was answered by a woman who said it was not Murray's phone, but that she could reach her. When Murray called back, she insisted that she does work in Michigan, but still lives in Nashville.  Asked if she had used a Michigan residential address on credit applications -- as our research indicates -- Murray replied, "I don't know."  Asked where she lives in Nashville, she answered, "Why are you asking me this?"
