Two Children Die In McMinnville Apartment Fire

McMINNVILLE, Tenn. - The McMinnville fire chief says two young girls have been killed in an apartment fire.

Chief Kevin Lawrence said a 1-year-old and 3-year-old died in a blaze that broke out about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday in the kitchen of their unit at Asbury Apartments.

"I sit there, I watch my babies die and it's killing me," said victims' grandmother Vicki Stone.

Officials said a hot plate left on in the kitchen apparently started the fire.

The parents were able to get out, but couldn't reach their children. They were identified as Kayndace and Akeelia Fisher.

Both children died at a local hospital.

The children's biological mother, who did not live at the apartment, was devastated and upset.

"I can't even put into words what it's like. You know, I just want to get to the bottom of it and I want to find out the truth," said children's mother Sandra Fisher.

Lawrence said the fire appeared to be accidental, but an investigation was still under way.
