NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A Room in the Inn broke ground Thursday morning on a new $11 million homeless center.

Charles Strobel, founding director of a Room in the Inn, a non-profit that helped the homeless in Nashville broke ground on a facility that will house services under one roof.

"A comprehensive center that provides job training, education and recovery for addiction and medical for people to rest and recuperate," said Strobel.

Many at the ceremony wore peanut butter and jelly sandwich stickers because 25 years ago, the project started with Strobel handing out sandwiches to the city's homeless.

"Oh Lord, I never thought it would happen or even dream of this. Tells us the power of PB&J sandwich," said Strobel.

Herman Jennings turned the first shovel of dirt. He will be among the first to live in one of the 38 apartments.

"I've never been homeless in my life until I got started on drugs," said Jennings. "I feel honored and blessed a place like this to come and get my life back together."

The center will be built on 8th Avenue South right behind Room in the Inn. It's scheduled to open next June.
