ALEXANDRIA, Tenn. - In between an old guitar and leftovers, Matt McKenney found a puppy in a garbage bag. The puppy got a second chance, but it's not the first time an animal's been dumped like trash.
On Grant Highway in Smith County, most everyone in the area have had to visit the trash dump at one time or another.
"Throw their household trash away, demolition trash, boards, plywood, things like that," said McKenney.
Friday morning three guys heard a noise and knew someone had thrown away much more than just a bag of garbage.
"I jumped over in the dumpster, pulled the bag out, handed it up to the guys that heard it. They tore it open and that's when we found the pup," said McKenney. "It's a place for trash, not animals."
A little puppy was tied up inside a garbage bag, and the sight did not surprise McKenney.
"I found five cats, five little kittens before, over in the household bin," said McKenney.
Smith County residents do not know why the dog had to end up at the dump.
"It's just a tragedy that someone wouldn't care enough to at least take it to an animal shelter. Both my dogs came from the animal shelter in Lebanon," said Smith County resident Barry Corbin.
Matt McKenney will watch over the puppy, he named Angel, until he finds a good home. Angel did seem a little shook up after her trip into the dumpster.
The little pup will be back at the dump Saturday morning if you'd like to adopt him. That dump drop-off site is located at Exit 254 off Interstate 40, not too far from the Wilson/Smith County line.
