OLIVER SPRINGS, Tenn. (AP) - Anderson County Sheriff Paul White said a wet, mushy grass landing strip, coupled with a strong crosswind, were likely factors in the airplane crash that killed a Powell man.
White is also a commercial airline pilot, reported The Knoxville News Sentinel.
His office identified the dead pilot as 66-year-old Doyle R. Chadwick.
Investigators said the single-engine plane traveled 800-900 feet after it touched down near Oliver Springs before it struck a tree on the pilot's side of the cabin Sunday.
Three other people aboard suffered minor injuries: 49-year-old Phillip Byrge, 12-year-old Nathan Byrge and 8-year-old Mary Byrge.
No address was available Monday for the passengers.
The plane was a four-seat Piper Cherokee registered to a flying club.
