School Rezoning Proposal Causes Upset Parents

Posted:

COLUMBIA, Tenn. - Several parents showed up at a public meeting Monday night, worried their children will be taken away from the school they love.

Many parents said they live on Knob Creek Road specifically so their children can go to Santa Fe Unit School in Maury County. They worry the new proposal will change everything.

Each day, wildcat footprints guide students in to Santa Fe school, and there are 42 students whose families worry they'll soon be guided in a very different direction.

Maury County Schools are considering a rezoning proposal to accommodate a new middle school that will open in Spring Hill next fall. Some of Santa Fe's students would be moved there and to Spring Hill's elementary and high schools.

Instead, parents prefer Santa Fe, their rural k-12 school over Spring Hill's larger facilities.

Families affected by the proposed change plan to attend and speak at all three of the district's zoning meetings.

School officials stress this is just a rezoning proposal. They're holding public meetings in order to get feedback, which would lead to proper changes if necessary.

Parents in the Zion community also expressed concerns about the rezoning proposal. The last public meeting will take place next Monday at Mt. Pleasant Middle School.
