(AP) KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee and Lane Kiffin have agreed to a contract that will pay the coach an average $2.4 million for the next six seasons.
As agreed to in a memo of understanding when the coach was hired in November, Kiffin will earn $2 million in 2009, which includes a base salary and pay for broadcasting responsibilities and endorsements.
His total salary will gradually increase each season. He will be paid a total of $2.75 million for the 2014 season, the final year of the contract.
Should Kiffin be fired without cause, he will be paid a buyout of between $5 million and $7.5 million, depending on the time left on his contract.
Kiffin must inform Tennessee athletics director Mike Hamilton if he is interested in any other college or professional coaching job or is approached about another job.
He will owe the university between $200,000 and $1 million should he take another job.
