Families Want Answers After Fatal I-65 Crash

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - One day after a double fatal crash, family members want to know what caused the driver of an ambulance to run off the interstate and hit a TDOT truck.

Sue Bly was one of the victims. She was being transported by ambulance back to her nursing home.

Her family said Sue was just starting to recover from a stroke. The 78-year-old suffered from a number of health problems recently.

"I never would have thought she would have went this way," said daughter Mary Lee Lewis.

Bly was being transported back to Nashville's Lakeshore Nursing Home from dialysis treatment. She was riding in the back of a Rural/Metro ambulance when the vehicle collided with a parked TDOT truck.

The truck was stopped on the shoulder near I-440.

Sue and 36-year-old ambulance driver David Cline were killed in the collision.

"It's a sad thing that two families have lost a life, but you may never really know what happened," said Lewis.

Cline worked part time for Rural/Metro. He had been a full-time firefighter in the Franklin County community for 9 years.

"The pain that our entire staff feels as a result of this tragic and unexpected loss of one of our own is immeasurable," Franklin Fire Chief Rocky Garzarek said in a written statement.

"Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with David's family and all victims in this tragic accident"

Nashville firefighter Evans Johnson was riding in the back of the ambulance with Sue. He was transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center. Johnson was listed in critical but stable condition Friday afternoon.

The TDOT driver, Robert Green, suffered minor injuries. He was able to return home, and said he was doing well.

The crash affected many families, and leaves even more questions.

"Somebody made a mistake. I don't know who it was. I don't know if it was the state or this ambulance service, but there's a missing link in there somewhere," said Sue's husband, Charlie Bly.

Sue Bly will be laid to rest on Monday. Funeral arrangements for Cline had not been finalized.

TDOT officials said they were not sure why Green was stopped on the shoulder. He was not helping a driver, but there are a number of reasons why he could have been pulled over.

The emergency lights on the TDOT truck were turned off. Officials said if drivers don't feel like they need the lights, they are not mandated to have them on.

The Metro Nashville Police Department was called in Thursday to investigate the crash.
