NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Tennessee lawmakers have been exploring the creation of a state Department on Aging and Adult Services.
Democratic Sen. Lowe Finney of Jackson is chair of the joint committee that met Wednesday to discuss it.
Finney said currently services for Tennessee's elderly population are spread over at least nine different departments and state agencies, which makes it difficult for people to know who to contact.
He said a more streamlined approach would not only benefit the elderly, but possibly cost the state less money.
The concept is supported by Patrick Willard, AARP Tennessee's policy director.
Officials said the department would also provide representation before the governor, whose cabinet does not have an individual who represents the elderly.
