Bredesen: State's Poor Economy Shown Little Improvement

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Gov. Phil Bredesen said state layoffs were likely because the state's poor economy has shown little improvement.

Bredesen asked state agencies to plan for up to nine percent cuts in their spending plans for the next budget year.

The governor said he was open to other options to offset layoffs - such as furloughs and contract freezes.
