Former Teacher Receives Maximum Sentence

PORTLAND, Tenn. – The former Portland High School teacher convicted of having sex with a student received the maximum sentence of 12 years on Friday. 

Sandy Binkley was convicted back in September on two counts of statutory rape by an authority figure. 

She will serve two, six year sentences consecutively at 30 percent served. 

The convictions stem back to an incident in the Portland high school volleyball office in 2008. Binkley claimed a 17 year old student raped her, but he claimed the sex was consensual.     

Binkley was found not guilty on seven other charges stemming from allegations by two other students who claimed she had sex with them.
