SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee's largest National Guard combat unit is headed off to Iraq again, and thanks to some help from two municipalities, the soldiers will have a chance to come home for the holidays.
Tennessee Guard's 278th Armored Calvary Regiment begins training at Camp Shelby , Mississippi on December 5th for two months. Then the 3,300 soldiers are headed off to Iraq.
The military does not fund soldiers' short trips back home from training during the holidays. According to one of the unit's family readiness groups, Bedford and Marshall county commissioners have stepped in to fund more than $6,000 worth of transport costs to bring the soldiers home from Camp Shelby before they head to Iraq.
