NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A Celina woman was attacked by two pit bulls when a stranger stopped and pulled one of the dogs off of her. She is looking for the man she said saved her life.
Greda Cherry walks regularly around her neighborhood. She said she decided to walk to her parents home three miles from her house on Saturday, November 14. As she walked down Highway 53 in Clay County, a pit bull ran off one of her neighbor’s porch and attacked her.
"I knew when I saw that first one, he was not going to walk away from me," said Cherry.
She fell to the ground and tried to crawl away across Highway 53, when another, bigger, pit bull attacked by biting her arm.
"I kept thinking they were going to get to my face and pull my eyes out or my ear off," said Cherry.
She felt she was going to die as both dogs tore into her legs, arms and abdomen.
"I ended up with more than 70 stitches and 18 puncture sites from the dogs,” said Cherry.
Cherry said the hardest part of it all, several people watched as the attack continued. She said minutes later a man grabbed the biggest dog, while the owner of the dogs grabbed the smaller one.
She ran to the first vehicle, which happen to belong to the mysterious man. He rushed her to the Cumberland River Hospital.
"He kept telling me, 'you’re going to be okay, just calm down, you’re going to live,'" said Cherry.
The man carried her inside and waved good bye, but it was not until days later when she learned his name. Someone told her his name was Brian Crabtree, but that is all she knows.
"I really would like to meet him again and hug him and thank him for saving my life," said Cherry. "He’s the only one that put his life in danger to save mine."
Cherry, a registered nurse, said she loves dogs and has two of her own, but thinks owners should keep their dogs, especially pit bulls, on a leash.
Four days after the attack Cherry said she felt better and was able to walk around her home. She plans to return to work at Livingston Regional Hospital in the next two to three weeks.
She said doctors believe she will need cosmetic surgery for the wounds on her abdomen.
The two pit bulls responsible for the attack have been put down according to Clay County Sheriff deputies.
