Parents Concerned About Rezoning In Williamson County

Posted:

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. - Parents and students in one area of Williamson County are upset about a plan that would separate students from one middle school and send them to two different high schools.

Dozens of parents, students and community leaders gathered at Ravenwood High School Thursday with their message on paper and in voice.

They want to know more about a new rezoning plan, which the central office recently presented to school board members.

"Probably 100, 150 kids will be split off and then go to Centennial, with the rest of the middle school coming here. It would be splitting the class, not even in half. It would be a minor portion of our kids going somewhere else,” said concerned parent Ted Danner.

The problem focuses on overcrowding at Ravenwood high. Officials said they need to eventually start shifting some 8th graders to Centennial high. Parents said disrupting the feeder school chain is not the answer.

Ann Brinkmann is worried about her 6th grade daughter.

"Actually now in middle school, she's finally started making some friends. She's got a close bunch of great kids around her, and none of them are going to Centennial with her,” said Brinkmann.

School board member Terry Leve assured parents the rezoning plan is not a done deal.

"Is this the best plan that we have on the table? Should we look at tweaking some things here and there? Should the whole plan be thrown aside? That's what tonight's about. Past experience with these types of things, great things come out of these meetings, and changes occur,” said Leve.

A special school board meeting to discuss the rezoning plan has been called for Monday, November 30.
