CHARLOTTE, Tenn. – Two Dickson County teens died after a car crash Tuesday evening, and the Department of Safety released the names of the deceased driver and passenger Wednesday.
According to Mike Browning with the Department of Safety, the driver was identified as 16-year-old Tyler G. Broadfoot. An investigating trooper said that Broadfoot was not wearing his seatbelt.
The passenger was identified as 16-year-old Brandon Walls. He was wearing a seatbelt.
The crash happened along Steel Road, outside of the Charlotte city limits. Police are still trying to figure out why Broadfoot ran off the road.
Browning said the vehicle was coming out of a curve at a high rate of speed, lost control and then left the roadway going airborne. The vehicle then struck a tree on the rear driver's side, rupturing the fuel tank and catching on fire. Emergency personnel said the vehicle was fully engulfed upon arrival.
Local residents said both of the victims were students at Creekwood High School in Charlotte, and those who know the victims said the Creekwood High School community went into a state of shock.
"I love both of them. I hope they're up there looking down on us right now smiling, just thinking how stupid we are for crying over them. I know it isn't stupid because we love them," said fellow student Clint Gibson.
Tuesday was the last day of school before the Thanksgiving break. School counselors will be available for students next week when they return.
