NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Second Harvest Food Bank said food donations have been dwindling, and it's worst than years past. The demand for food is up 50 percent, compared to just five years ago.
Officials with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Research said about 13 percent of Tennesseans are food insecure. Meaning they don't have access to adequate nutrition.
Second Harvest's goal is to distribute food throughout 46 counties in Tennessee. That's about 7 million meals, but right now Second Harvest said they are about 4 million meals short of their goal.
In November, they fell some 60,000 meals short of their monthly goal.
In Davidson County, demand for food is up 38 percent. About 30 percent of people who come to food banks at least one person works in their home, but it's still not enough to feed their family and pay their bills.
