Free Tax Prep Services Offered In Davidson County

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - More than $400 million in tax credits are unclaimed each year in the state of Tennessee and United Way is helping people get the money they are owed.

When it comes to filing taxes everyone hopes they get a return, rather than owing the federal government money.

"Some people have the mistaken impression that they are going to owe the federal government money, that's not true," said Rep. Jim Cooper. "If you make less than $49,000 a year, the high probability is the federal government owes you money."

Congressman Cooper said when your income tax credits are not claimed, that money is kept by the federal government.

The United Way has opened free tax prep locations in Davidson County. All workers are volunteers trained by the IRS.

Tammy Davis is just one of the hundreds of people who have taken the United Way up on their services for years.

"It's great for myself being disabled," said Davis. "The economy is bad and you save a few dollars coming here."

Last year the United Way helped claim a huge portion of millions in income tax credits that a lot of residents are missing out on in Middle Tennessee.

"We did $11.4 million through the 18 free tax prep sites last year and it's good news," said Eric Dewey with United Way. "The sobering news is the IRS tells us there's another $25 million in unclaimed income tax credit dollars."

The free services are offered until mid-April.
