Jennifer Kraus is NewsChannel 5's Investigative Reporter and Weekend Morning Anchor.
She joined NewsChannel 5 in September 1994 as a general assignment reporter. Her focus now is on consumer-related investigations. As part of NewsChannel 5's Investigative team, she has exposed unscrupulous business practices at Bill Heard Chevrolet, neglect at the Tennessee State Veterans' Home, and loopholes in the Tennessee Sex Offender Registry. Her undercover investigations have prompted state regulators to shut down an investment scheme and state lawmakers to pass legislation concerning handicapped parking permits. Jennifer's stories have also exposed fraud and deception at a local brake repair chain, a dating service, a modeling agency, and dozens of used car lots. Her work as an investigative reporter at NewsChannel 5 began after she caught the top managers at the local headquarters of Feed the Children stealing from the charity.
As a general assignment reporter, Jennifer spent nearly two weeks in Nicaragua and El Salvador with units from Fort Campbell's 101st Division after Hurricane Mitch. She got the first interview with convicted serial killer Paul Dennis Reid from his jail cell just after his arrest and the last interview with James Earl Ray, assassin of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in prison just before he died.
As a morning anchor, one of the questions she is most often asked is what time does she have to get up in order to be at work. The answer: 3 a.m.
Jennifer has been recognized for her work with regional Emmy Awards, Associated Press Awards, and an Edward R. Murrow Award from the Radio-Television News Directors Association.
Before joining NewsChannel 5, Jennifer worked at WSFA-TV in Montgomery, Alabama, WSIL-TV in Carterville, Illinois, and KGET-TV in Bakersfield, California. She got her start in the TV business while in college, working at KHJ/KCAL-TV and KCBS-TV in Los Angeles, California.
Jennifer graduated from Occidental College in Los Angeles, California where she studied international relations, political science and Japanese.
She is married and has four children.
