School Board Approves Bible Course Despite ACLU Lawsuit

A lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union is not stopping a Midstate school district accused of endorsing Christianity.

The Wilson County School Board voted almost unanimously Monday night to offer an elective Bible course for county schools.

All but two speakers Tuesday night told Wilson County Board of Education members why offering such a class violates separation of church and state.

But board members argued the majority already spoke-at a prayer rally in October and at a recent work session.

The ACLU has spoken, too.

It filed a lawsuit claiming Wilson County Schools cannot endorse one religion without recognizing all religions.

"This is a Bible course," said Olivia Eyer who opposes the elective course. "It will be preaching the Bible."

Despite Tuesday night's "yea" vote, school board members won't start drawing up a curriculum just yet.

It's still very unclear what this Bible course will look like.
