Bargain Shoppers Beware After Credit Hacking

With 24 TJ Maxx stores, 12 Marshall's, six HomeGoods and five AJ Wrights in the state, Tennessee shoppers may be at risk for identity theft after TJX Companies, which owns the stores, were hacked into some time last year.

Shoppers of the discount stores are urged to check their credit cards for signs of identity theft.

TJX Companies, which owns all fo the subsidiary stores, said someone hacked into their system late last year stealing millions of customers' financial information -- credit cards, debit cards, even checks.

Consumers can contact the company for additional information through their new toll-free number at 1-866-484-6978

Banks and credit card companies are aware of the problem as well.

Tennessee's Attorney General has also gotten involved due to the volume of potential victims. The attorney general warns all customers to take a close look at their statements.

Customers should also be aware that TJX Companies will not contact consumers via email or phone to verify person or account information. Do not give out personal or account information to anyone who claims to be from a TJX Company.

If your information has been compromised, you can request a copy of your credit report. By law, you are entitled to receive a free credit report every year from each of the three major credit bureaus.
