DUI Warrant Issued For Sen. Jerry Cooper

NASHVILLE, Tenn.- The Tennessee Department of Safety obtained a warrant in Rutherford County, charging State Sen. Jerry W. Cooper of Morrison with driving under the influence and speeding.

Cooper was involved in a one-car accident on Feb. 7 on Interstate 24 near Murfreesboro. Sources said Cooper's blood alcohol level was 0.18 (the legal limit is 0.08).

The Tennessee Highway Patrol investigated the crash. A complete investigative report will be provided to District Attorney General William Whitesell of Rutherford County, who is handling the case, according to a Department of Safety spokesman.

Cooper is expected to be served the warrant "when he is physically able," according to a Department of Safety news release. Cooper is recuperating at home.

A truck driver who witnessed the crash told NewsChannel 5 that he saw a half bottle of Jack Daniel's at the scene. Cooper's blood alcohol results have not been made public.

In interviews with the Associated Press the morning after the accident, different lawmakers said they saw the Morrison Democrat at three receptions in Nashville before the accident.

Witnesses told state troopers that Cooper's sport utility vehicle ran off the interstate. He was traveling toward his home, which is about 40 miles southeast of Nashville.

The vehicle ran up an embankment and rolled several times.

"While I cannot comment in detail about an ongoing investigation-and the Department of Safety has clearly stated that this investigation is ongoing-I have the utmost faith in our justice system, and I believe that justice will be served in this matter," Senate Democratic Caucus Joe Haynes of Goodlettsville said Tuesday in a statement.

"Details will be released at the appropriate times and in the appropriate manner," Haynes said. "Like the rest of the public, I'm waiting to see what those details tell us."
