Senator Bill Frist was in town Thursday night to speak at a fundraising gala to raise money to build a health clinic in Kenya.
Milton Oshieng, Vanderbilt Medical School student from Kenya, is trying to raise the money to build a health clinic back in his home village of Lwala. The clinic still has not opened because they ran out of money for lab equipment, drugs and staffing.
He lost both of his parents to AIDS.
Senator Frist was scheduled as the keynote speaker at the event, which also included a fashion show and a silent auction.
He was confident Milton's clinic would open.
"There's no question there's hope. There's no question there's dreams and now it's just making it reality. It's hard work. People will get discouraged, people will come and go. Some people will participate for a few months and some people will see a light bulb and stay with it like I have for 10 years," Frist said.
Frist recently visited Kenya as part of a medical mission to Africa.
The event was at 7:00 p.m. at the Vanderbilt Student Center.
