Crews Prepare For Another New Madrid Quake

ST. LOUIS - Tennessee emergency responders will be among those practicing their response to a fake earthquake beginning Tuesday.

Officials said the public probably won't notice the drills, which will be conducted over three days. They include tabletop exercises, but also practice in the field.

The exercises relate to a mock 7.7 magnitude earthquake along the New Madrid fault. A network of deep cracks in the earth's surface runs from southern Illinois to northeastern Arkansas.

The New Madrid Fault Line is responsible for four of the largest North American earthquakes in recorded history, with magnitude estimates greater than 7.0 on the Richter scale - all occurring within a 3 month period between 1811 and 1812.
