Authorities confirmed a tornado touchdown near Arlington, which is about 25 miles northeast of downtown Memphis. According to The Associated Press, it knocked out a radio tower for the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
Memphis police said a storm, possibly a tornado damaged Hickory Ridge Mall and other buildings.
A tornado warning is in effect for parts of West Tennessee including McNairy and southwestern Hardin counties.
A tornado was detected on radar near Ramer or about nine miles northwest of Corinth, moving northeast at 60 miles an hour.
In addition to the tornado, the storm is capable of producing baseball-sized hail and destructive straight line winds, according to the National Weather Service.
A tornado warning is also in effect for Carroll County and southeastern Gibson County, both in West Tennessee as well as in northern Henderson County and northeastern Madison County, both in southwest Tennessee.
Authorities in Madison County said there are reports of a tornado touching down in Jackson. The storm reportedly destroyed a home in the Purier area, just north of Paris. Paris is in Henry County in upper northwest Tennesse.
A tornado warning is also in effect in southern Hopkins County, northern Christian County, southeastern Caldwell County and northeastern Trigg County - all in Kentucky.
A front moving into the region was forecast to produce storms with hail, damaging winds, and the chance of tornadoes.
