NASHVILLE, Tenn. - On Friday, the one-time Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson endorsed Sen. John McCain.

Thompson said the GOP party needed to "close ranks" behind the presumed nominee.

"This is no longer about past preferences or differences. It is about what is best for our country and for me that means that Republican should close ranks behind John McCain," Thompson said in a statement reported by the Associated Press.

Thompson and McCain were both in the Senate for years together, and shared what associates called a friendship. Despite their friendship during the presidential race, Thompson had strongly opposed the idea that he would to drop out and endorse McCain.

Thompson represented Tennessee in the Senate for eight years, and Mike Huckabee, not McCain, won the Republican primary in Tennessee
