FEMA Mobile Homes Headed To Tenn.

LAFAYETTE, Tenn. - Dozens of FEMA manufactured homes will be shipped to Tennessee to provide temporary housing to those who lost their homes in last week's tornadoes.

Many are headed to Macon County where 13 people died and hundreds of homes were destroyed.

"We will work in partnership with state and local officials to ensure that displaced applicants are placed in the best available housing solutions," said FEMA Administrator David Paulison in a news release.

FEMA-provided homes must meet or exceed HUD standards as a temporary housing option, according to Barbara Gibson of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

About 150 manufactured homes are slated to go to Tennessee.

On Thursday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said tests indicate some trailers used by Gulf Coast hurricane victims contain high levels of formaldehyde.

CDC Director Dr. Julie Gerberding said high enough levels can cause breathing problems for children, the elderly and people with respiratory problems, according to The Associated Press.

FEMA said Thursday it would move hurricane victims out of more than 35,000 trailers.

Officials said the temporary housing units coming to Tennessee do not contain formaldehyde.

Bill Graves' Fleetwood Homes plant built more than 600 manufactured homes for FEMA for Katrina victims.

"Some were placed down there, but a lot of them have been in storage ever since," Graves said.

FEMA said the homes coming to Tennessee are safe.

Graves agrees.

"People need solid housing that they feel comfortable with and that we certainly don't want them to be afraid to live in one of these homes," he said.

Thirteen counties in Tennessee were designated as disaster areas in the wake of a series of severe storms that ripped across the state.

Homeowners, renters and businesses can receive assistance to help recover from the tornadoes.
