Amber Alert Issued For Missing Child Canceled

Smyrna, Tenn. - Officials have canceled a statewide Amber Alert after taking Jerry Jones into custody.

The alert was issued Thursday morning after police said Jones took his 4-year-old daughter without the permission of the custodial parent.

Jones, who is from Cummings, Ga., was out on bond in Georgia for child molestation charges, when he visited his daughter, Madison, in Commerce, Ga., on Feb. 12.

After visiting his daughter, Jones' bond was revoked. Then shortly after that Jones took Madison.

The U.S. Marshals had been on the case, and caught up with and cornered Jones and his daughter at the Ramada Inn at 8 a.m. Thursday in Franklin, Tenn.

Jones was able to escape with his daughter.

Police got a call from a member of the public who recognized the vehicle Jones was driving - a white 1996 Ford Taurus with a stolen Tennessee license plate.

Authorities found the vehicle in a drive-thru car wash in Smyrna. Jones had already painted about three-fourths of the vehicle black.

After seeing police, the suspect jumped back into the vehicle and drove away. A pursuit with officers ensued, with speeds reaching 100 miles per hour.

The chase ended near 531 Rock Springs Road in Smyrna and Jones was taken into custody. Jones was expected to be booked into a Rutherford County detention facility and charged with reckless endangerment and other charges.

Officials said the child was transported to Stone Crest Medical Center to be treated for a slight abrasion on her head. She was otherwise uninjured. The girl's mother has been contacted and will make her way to Tennessee from Georgia, at which time she will assume custody of the 4-year-old.

Madison lives with her mother Renee Kerr in Commerce, Georgia.
