BAXTER, Tenn. -A fire broke out in downtown Baxter, which is just west of Cookeville.
Fire Chief Chris Holmes said a block of Broad Street was on fire Friday morning, destroying or damaging at least a third of downtown.
The fire was so large that the Baxter fire department called both the Putnam County Fire Department and the Cookeville Department for help.
Holmes said at least three businesses have been destroyed by the fire - a restaurant, a furniture store and a grocery store.
Officials said someone was walking by a furniture store early Friday morning and noticed smoke. When fire firefighters arrived the building was fully involved.
No injuries have been reported at this time, and firefighters do not yet know how the fire started.
