NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Thurgood Marshall College Fund hosted its inaugural Nashville Awards of Excellence at the Country Music Hall of Fame Museum Thursday night.
Named for the late U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice, the college fund represents historically black colleges and universities in 22 states.
Proceeds from the Nashville Awards of Excellence will help the Thurgood Marshall College Fund provide merit scholarships and programmatic support to students at 47 public HBCUs.
The 2008 inaugural Awards of Excellence distinguished recipients were: The Honorable Adolpho A. Birch Jr., retired Chief Justice of the Tennessee Supreme Court; the Honorable William Joseph Hayes Jr. of the U.S. District Court, Middle District of Tennessee; Dr. T.B. Boyd, III, president and CEO of National Baptist Publishing Board; Rita Mitchell, senior vice president of First Tennessee Bank for the greater Nashville area; and Waller Lansden Dortch and Davis, LLP.
