NASHVILLE, Tenn.- Local experts are warning middle Tennesseans to do research before they make their next call to a locksmith. You could be inviting a scam artist to your home.

Members of the Middle Tennessee Locksmith Association said perpetrators are running a widespread scam.  They said many of the locksmiths who advertise with full page ads in telephone books or online are actually unlicensed scam artists.

Some of those companies will offer low initial quotes then slap customers with a much higher bill at the end.

"You call them they say it will be $30, $39. Then they come out, and they charge you $150.  That's what we're trying to show police, and get rid of," said Jayson Wolbert with the Middle T. Locksmith Association.

The Better Business Bureau said it has received more than 20 complaints on such companies in the past half year.  The locksmith association recommends only hiring locksmiths who have been properly licensed by the state.
