MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) -- Murfreesboro police said a commander mishandled an investigation into an incident where an 11-year-old Kentucky girl was killed while crossing a road.

Murfreesboro Police Chief Glenn Chrisman said Friday that Sgt. Sam Campbell was placed on administrative leave with pay because of a two-hour lapse in giving a blood alcohol test to Rutherford County Sheriff's Detective Ron Killings.

On July 17, Killings' unmarked county car struck and killed Lakeisha White of Hopkinsville, Ky., while she crossed a street during a visit with relatives. The incident is under investigation.

Killings was placed on administrative leave after the incident but has since returned to work.
