MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) - The Rutherford County district attorney requested another DA replace him in the investigation into an 11-year-old Kentucky girl's death after a sheriff's detective vehicle struck and killed her as she crossed the street.

Bill Whitesell said in a statement Monday an attorney for Lakeisha White's family asked him to step down from investigating the July 17 incident involving sheriff's deputy Ron Killings.

The family also requested the Tennessee Highway Patrol take over the investigation being conducted by Murfreesboro police.

Whitesell said he requested the Tennessee District Attorney's General Conference to appoint a district attorney pro tem. The district attorney pro term would make any further decisions into the investigation and potential prosecution.

At the beginning of August, police suspended a commander after disclosing a two-hour lapse between the accident and the time when

Killings had to submit to a blood-alcohol sample, which came back negative for traces of alcohol or illegal drugs.
