PORTLAND, Tenn. - Police arrested a math teacher who allegedly had sex with a student while school was in session.

Portland High School math teacher Sandra Binkley turned herself into police Thursday. She was charged with statutory rape by an authority figure for allegedly having sex with a 17-year-old student on campus during school hours.

"He said she was okay, she was real nice," said Fred Rogan, quoting how his son described the teacher. "He said she was real friendly."

Al West of the Portland Police Department said Binkley had sexual relations with a student in March.

Investigators found about the case after the teenager told his parents, who reported the incident to school administrators this week.

"The Sumner County School District will not tolerate the type of behavior alleged in this incident for any of its employees," said Jeremy Johnson, Sumner County Schools spokesman.

"My son called and told me what had happened and I was very upset," Rogan said.

Rogan isn't the only parent concerned about the situation.

"You send your child to school and they're there all day," said Melissa McBride, another parent. "You have to trust that school is going to take care of them. So, yeah, you worry about it. You do."

Police said this is an isolated incident no other victims have come forward.

Binkley was suspended without pay until the incident is resolved. The school district is considering providing counseling for some of the students at the high school.
