Bottle Not Collected From Fatal Crash

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) -- New documents show evidence was not properly collected by police following a fatal crash by a Rutherford County sheriff's detective that killed an 11-year-old girl.

A written reprimand issued to Murfreesboro Police Sgt. Shawn Murphy failed to collect a bottle photographed by police at the fatal crash scene in Rutherford County in July.

The family of Lakeisha White, from Hopkinsville, Ky., turned over to police a bottle of liquor found at the scene that they say is linked to Sgt. Ron Killings, who struck White as she was crossing a road.

Murphy resigned from the fatal accident crash team that initially investigated the crash and another officer was suspended for mishandling the investigation. Both are still working for the department.

The reprimand, obtained by The Daily News Journal, also questioned why the car was towed to the sheriff's office impound lot, "rather than remain in control of the (Murfreesboro) Police Department."
