NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A Belmont University student wants to change the lives of needy children across the globe and in Music City.
Joshua Maisner is a third year Marketing student, and he embarked on a mission of change.
"I definitely would love to go into nonprofit work," said Maisner. "Even though I didn't have a lot of money to give I had a little."
Maisner started off with a simple idea.
"I came up with the idea that if I saved a dollar a week for 20 weeks that's $20 and with 5,000 students at Belmont if we each did that we would raise $100,000 dollars," said Maisner.
The student told a few friends and the idea spread on facebook. Then the university got involved and the United for Change campaign began.
"It was a wonderful idea incredibly simple, but could be incredibly powerful for the children of the world," said Pamela Johnson with Belmont University.
United for Change donation boxes are posted around campus. T-shirts and wrist bans with the charity's name are also sold in the campus bookstore.
"It also was a way to reach the next generation of philanthropists how to give and that was really an important part of this project," said Johnson
The campaign has raised a few thousand dollars. Maisner's goal is to raise a couple hundred thousand. If the campaign goes well he hopes to one day spread the message to other universities.
