Preacher’s Wife Asks For Statement To Be Thrown Out

Mary Winkler's attorneys asked the court to keep the statement she made to police immediately after her arrest out of her trial.

In that statement, Winkler admits to shooting her husband Matthew in the back as he lay in bed. Her attorneys claim she had not been properly advised that her statements could be used against her, and that she was under duress when she made the statement.

They also claim Winkler's statements were not given voluntarily. Another motion filed Wednesday asked for evidence in the case to be suppressed, saying it was illegally seized.

The judge did not say when he would rule on the two motions.

Later in the afternoon, Mary Winkler's defense attorneys, along with an employee of a bonding company, tried to post Winkler's $750,000 bond and get her released from jail, but the judge said he needed more tim to review the paperwork before allowing her release.
