Mary Winkler Charged With Husband's Death

The authorities have questioned Mary Winkler about the death of her preacher husband. What Winkler told them led them to charge her with first-degree murder.

Mary Winkler and her three daughters disappeared from Selmer, Tenn. right before the body of Matthew Winkler, her husband, was found. His body was found in the bedroom of their home by church members.

Winkler was a minister at the Fourth Street Church of Christ in Selmer.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation put out a statewide Amber Alert but didn't get many calls. Investigators figured out she was heading to southern Alabama. That’s where an Alabama police officer with a keen eye spotted Winkler and her three children.

Soon after, the TBI said 32-year-old Mary Winkler confessed to shooting and killing her husband, Matthew Winkler.

Mary Winkler remained in an Orange Beach, Ala. jail. TBI agents said she has been very cooperative during the investigation so far.

“When something like this happens, you look at the history, the domestic violence, anything at all to give you a clue as to what happened or how it happened. We found nothing, no history of domestic violence. This was a true mystery,” said TBI spokeswoman Jennifer Johnson.

And as this mystery continues to unravel, stuck in the middle of it all are the Winkler's three young children.

The TBI said us Matthew Winkler's father went to Orange Beach on Friday to pick up his grandchildren.

The TBI wouldn't release much information about the children, except to say they're in good condition and they were probably not in the house when their mother killed their father.

In a statement released Friday from Matthew Winkler's family, his parents thanked God for allowing them the privilege of serving as his parents.

The family also said it was thankful for the existence of the Amber Alert system, and the care and compassion of the FBI, the TBI and the other police departments involved in this investigation.

The letter continued: "To all of you who prayed for the safe return of the girls, your prayers and our prayers were answered.

“Now we turn our immediate attention to the remembrance of Matthew and the care of our little granddaughters. We ask that all of you realize the challenge of the task ahead of us and honor our need for privacy."
