HDTV: Frequently Asked Questions

What is HDTV? How is it different than Standard TV?
HDTV is an acronym for High Definition Television. HDTV is the new standard in technology in a digital television format, delivering theater-quality pictures and CD-quality sound.

HDTV signals are transmitted in the form of data bits. Because these data bits are transmitted with parity checking and error correcting ability, the picture is always perfect - as long as you can receive the data stream you will get the best picture without ghosting, noise, sparkles or static.

What makes HDTV better than today's television?
Analog TV, or SDTV, is what we've been watching for more than 60 years. It has a resolution that's equivalent to about 640x480 pixels. An HDTV program, on the other hand, has a resolution that tops out at 1,920x1,080 pixels, more than six times as sharp.

Do I need a new television to watch HDTV?

HDTV is best viewed on a high definition digital television.  All new high definition television sets over 26" have an HD-Built In digital tuner (ATSC).

What is the difference between HDTV and DTV?
The terms "Digital Television" (DTV) and "High Definition Television" (HDTV) are often used interchangeably, but they are NOT the same thing. All HDTV is digital television, but not all digital television is HDTV. Digital Television (DTV) refers to a TV signal that is transmitted digitally. A High Definition Television (HDTV) provides the highest resolution and picture quality of all DTV formats.

Why would I want to buy an HDTV set?
Digital television and its centerpiece application, HDTV, represent an advance in TV technology even more significant than the introduction of color. Besides delivering much clearer images and six-channel surround sound, HDTV lets you watch motion pictures the way they were intended to be seen: on a wide 16-by-9 screen, one-third wider than today's 4-by-3 screens. In addition to its entertainment and home theater uses, digital TV will offer a variety of interactive applications. With a wider picture, over 1000 lines of resolution, and more than five times sharper than today's television, digital TV is capable of delivering virtually any combination of video, audio and data to the home.

What do I need in order to receive HDTV?
You will need a high definition television with an HD-Built In ATSC tuner and a standard antenna. You will still be able to watch TV on your old set, but you must have a converter box.
