NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Drew Maddux said McNair appeared completely normal on Friday while fishing with his two sons just hours before his tragic death.
"He arrived here at noon with his two boys and he fished till 7 p.m. right here," said Maddux.
Maddux first met McNair 12 years ago through a mutual friend and the former quarterback quickly fell in love with this pond at Maddux' farm in Gallatin.
"He loved to fish. He loved to eat the big catfish," said Maddux. "This was kind of his getting away place. He even fished in the winter time."
McNair became one of Maddux's most frequent visitors. The star would always ask permission or leave a note for his friend.
"I have a note he left me," said Maddox. "He said ‘Hi Drew I came by yesterday to fish.'"
Though there are questions and controversies surrounding McNair's final night, Maddux was thankful his friend's last day was spent with his boys.
"When I left that Friday he had that big smile, was with his boys - then to hear that it's unbelievable really," said Maddux. "I haven't been able to get it off my mind seeing him with his boys, so happy."
Drew Maddux's last memory of Steve McNair was with him at peace at his favorite getaway place.
"I miss him already. He was a special person," said Maddux.
Maddux said he mostly came alone, but he would occasionally bring family and once and awhile other titans teammates.
He also said McNair would often give to his community. In fact, McNair helped several families in Goodlettsville who were wiped out by the tornadoes in Sumner County two years ago.
