Guns In Parks Law Goes In Effect

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The controversial new state law that's been talked about for months went into effect Tuesday.

The law allows people with permits to carry guns into public parks, unless a local jurisdiction opts out. Local governments have been divided on the issue.

In Spring Hill city leaders voted to allow carry-permit holders to take guns in to Harvey Park and other city run recreation areas.

"I was relieved that we are still aloud to legally carry firearms and bring them into the park to protect ourselves and our children if necessary," said Suzanne, guns in parks supporter.

It was one of a few municipalities in Williamson County to make that decision.

Guns are banned in all Franklin, Brentwood and county parks. It's an issue people continue to debate.

"Why would you want a gun in a park? A park is where you want your kids to come and play and have a good time," said Carol Cole, guns in parks opponent.

Metro, along with Williamson County, Lebanon, Clarksville and Murfreesboro have all banned guns in their parks. Benton, Wilson, and Franklin Counties, as well as Spring Hill and Gallatin have all voted to uphold the law and allow guns.
