Students Around Mid-State Watch President's Speech

Posted:

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. - Students at Currey Ingram Academy in Brentwood took time out Tuesday morning to listen to the President's message of encouragement.

"It was good. It wasn't like anything we haven't heard before, but still good information. I didn't know about him and his family and what his mom had to do for him. That was good to know," said Currey Ingram senior Matthew Yessick.

Only a handful of students declined to hear the speech, and they still discussed educational goals in a nearby classroom.

School leaders said the decision to show the speech was an easy one.

"I think that we as Americans need to have respect for the office whether it's a Republican or Democrat. I think the office is what we respect and what kids need to know," said Currey Ingram director Kathy Rayburn.

Several school districts banned cameras inside their buildings saying the debate over whether or not to show the speech was too politically charged.
