Dickson schools still waiting for state funds

Associated Press - October 16, 2009 1:15 PM ET

CHARLOTTE, Tenn. (AP) - Residents in Dickson County were excited to hear the school budget was finalized earlier this week, but now the state has rejected the budget.

The school system was waiting on a $3.4 million payment from the state that was delayed because the budget wasn't finished by the Oct. 1 deadline. But after submitting the budget, state found a hole of about $67,000 and rejected it. That has led to concern about whether the schools can continue to stay open.

Rachael Woods, a spokeswoman for the State Board of Education, told WKRN-TV the school district is expected to amend its budget to cover the deficit during the next school board meeting on Monday.

Woods said the board expects to release state funds soon.
