Some Neighbors Unhappy About Methadone Clinic Approval

COLUMBIA, Tenn. - Plans for a methadone clinic in one of the busiest shopping centers on James Campbell Boulevard in Columbia is being met with mixed reviews.

Earlier this week the city's zoning board approved the location, but the clinic is not getting a warm welcome from all its neighbors.

"I feel that there is a place closer to the hospital area where it would be a more suitable atmosphere for it," said Kevin Martin.

Martin, like some other store owners, feels the Campbell Shopping Center is a family oriented place.

"It does make me feel uneasy for the families that bring their kids to the area," said Martin.

Martin said there is a need for the clinic, and he knows people that could benefit from it. He just can't agree, this is the best spot for the clinic.

"I just feel for the addicts or recovering addicts, to be in the same location, I just don't feel it's justified," said Martin.

Sue Bridges is a registered nurse who works next to where the methadone clinic would sit. She said she feels there is no reason for anyone to fear the clinic moving in.

"I think if it was here in town, then we can take care of our own family and friends instead of trying to ship them to Nashville. This is where it happens and this is where it ought to be treated," said Bridges.

The co-owner of the facility said there are still a number of inspections they have to pass, and those could take up to six months.

"If it's zoned and it's already been approved, then I think it would be good for our community if the people that need the care can get it right here in our own area," said Bridges.

The state's board of Healthcare Services Development Agency actually gave their approval for the methadone clinic back in August.
