MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Murfreesboro police were investigating a body found in a dumpster Wednesday morning. The dumpster had been set on fire.
The body was found just across from Middle Tennessee State University at Nottingham Apartments, which is behind Blue Raider Bookstore on Greenland Drive.
"Just smoldering, they were extinguishing the fire," said resident of apartment complex Weston Steger. "I called everyone and knocked on everyone's door making sure I could locate everybody."
Assistant Fire Chief Allen Swader said the body was burned beyond recognition, but officials said the victim was a white male wearing a t-shirt with the words Raider Campus. The shirt leads students to think the victim might attend MTSU.
"We found no identification. I think the only other thing found was a key," said Swader.
Swader said the body was found between 5:30 - 6:30 a.m. Wednesday. The last time the dumpster was emptied was Tuesday morning, which means there was about a 34 hour window of when the body could have been placed there.
Authorities are telling people not to panic. They hope this is an isolated incident. Fire officials said the case is not being treated as a homicide yet.
