NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The U.S. Department of Education will award Fisk University a $3 million grant to assist graduate students in getting degrees in fields where African Americans are underrepresented.

The school said Tuesday that the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Master's Degree Grant Award will be disbursed over the next six years. Part of the funds will provide full financial assistance for six Fisk graduate students to study biology, chemistry and physics.

About $500,000 will be used to initiate research projects, purchase laboratory instruments and make renovations to labs and classrooms.

The remaining funds will be used for academic support for graduate students and faculty involved in research.
