Tennessee Mother 'Returns' Adopted Boy To Russia

Posted:

(AP) MOSCOW - The Kremlin's children's rights office said an 8-year-old Russian boy adopted in Tennessee was flown by himself back to Moscow bearing a note saying his adoptive mother was returning him.

A spokeswoman for the children's rights ombudsman said Friday that Artem Savelyev showed up Thursday unaccompanied at Moscow's Domodedovo airport, carrying a letter from the woman saying the boy has severe psychological problems.

Anna Orlova identified the adoptive mother as Torry-Ann Hansen, from Shelbyville.

Orlova said the boy was adopted six months ago, and was traveling to Moscow on an expired U.S. visa.

He is now in a hospital for a medical check-up.

The note claims the orphanage he came from had lied about his condition.

Russia's foreign minister is urging a freeze in child adoptions to U.S. families. Russian news agencies cite Sergey Lavrov as saying the ministry will recommend that the U.S. and Russia hammer out an agreement before any new adoptions are allowed.
