NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A correctional officer was stabbed by an inmate at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution Tuesday night.

Corporal Rafael Morales was stabbed multiple times by inmate Kevin Goff at approximately 7:21 p.m. at the prison on Cockrill Bend Boulevard in West Nashville.

TDOC spokeswoman Dorinda Carter said it was unclear what kind of weapon was used but it was most likely a "shank."

Cpl. Morales was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The 13-year veteran of TDOC was reportedly in stable condition with stab wounds to his head, arms and abdomen.

Goff was sentenced to 20-years in 2001 for a 2nd Degree Murder conviction out of Maury County.

According to a press release, the TDOC plans to pursue an attempted murder charge against him after the Tuesday incident.

Internal Affairs agents are investigating the incident.
