The Tennessee State Capitol Building was lit pink in April 2010 to bring awareness to breast cancer. The American Cancer Society says the state is doing too little to fight cancer in all its forms.NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – The American Cancer Society released a statement saying Tennessee is falling short on legislative efforts to fight the disease.
The society said in a news release that the state measured up to benchmarks in none of six categories, including: breast and cervical cancer early detection program funding; the uninsured; colorectal screening coverage laws; smoke-free laws; tobacco prevention funding; and tobacco taxes.
Society officials encouraged legislators to enact laws and policies that eliminate barriers for the proper diagnosis, treatment and care of cancer patients.
The organization said cancer kills 13,600 people in Tennessee each year.
