NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Police arrested country music singer Chris Cagle and his girlfriend, Jennifer Tant, early Wednesday morning for domestic assault.

Cagle and Tant were headed home from Players Inn in Bellevue when they got in a verbal fight. The fight became physical once the couple returned to Cagle's home.

According to police, when officers arrived on the scene the couple was intoxicated, and both Cagle and Tant had signs of physical abuse.

Cagle had a raised area on the right side of his head, which according to the affidavit, came from Tant hitting him with an umbrella.

The affidavit also said that Tant had a scrape on her upper left lip and a sore, red left arm from Cagle hitting her with her purse.

Police said the couple refused to leave the home they shared. According to the affidavit, Tant even said she would rather go to jail then leave Cagle's home.

Due to Tennessee domestic violence laws both parties were considered to be the primary aggressor, and both parties were taken into custody.

The couple was booked around 4:40 a.m. Wednesday, and each must stay in jail until 4:40 p.m. that same day. Cagle was suppose to leave on a bus at 10 a.m. Wednesday for a performance at Midnight Rodeo in Ocala, Fla. Cagle's and Tant's bond was set at $1,500 each.

Cagle has also been scheduled to stand trial on Sept. 23 for a misdemeanor assault charge stemming from a Dec. 13, 2007, altercation after a benefit concert in Tucson, Ariz. Cagle was accused of striking Mark Barry. Police said Cagle punched Barry in the face after Barry's girlfriend became verbally abusive toward Cagle. Cagle's attorney said during a preliminary hearing on April 21 that the singer acted in self-defense. Barry filed a civil lawsuit against Cagle.

Fans know Cagle for his number one hit "I Breathe In, I Breathe Out," and for his fun anthems "Chick Dig It" and "Wal-Mart Parking Lot." Cagle's latest release was "No Love Songs."
